Anyone seen Chinese box? I was just researching an article on the Mid-Levels Escalators and this was apparently set right at one of the escalators. Looks interesting, I'll find somewhere to download it...

Chinese Box Film set during the Hong Kong handover

I found the time to watch this on a flight to Europe last weekend. Jeremy Irons acted as though he just couldn't be bothered. In fact, the acting in this film was generally poor. Even though this handicapped the film, I enjoyed watching it somehow. Gong Li was great, she played the perfect hostess with a heart and she made the rest of the cast look like complete amateurs.
I must admit that Irons' drunk tantrum in a hostess bar sure brought back some very uncomfortable personal memories of my time in Hong Kong... so young and stupid. I think Irons was miscast, he was too old to play the part of a naive idealist.
If you're not British, or have no interest in Hong Kong, this film will probably bore you senseless... but for me, it was a very interesting examination of the time of the handover to Chinese rule. Indeed, it was filmed during and just after the handover, and it's peppered with archive footage of the ceremony, Chris Patten struggling to hold back the tears, and of course the fireworks over the harbour that night. Don't forget Kai Tak was still operating during that time and there's a fantastic sequence with Li and Irons in Kowloon city where they were watching the aircraft on approach, and a GREAT shot of a Cathay 747 on approach in the old CX colours...

I would recommend 3 earlier Ang Li's movies if you are interested in this kind of movies:
btw, since wiki has no qualms about spoilers, don't read too much into the plot.
