MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - An armed group on Thursday morning took hostage at least 75 people, including pupils, in Prosperidad town in Agusan del Sur, police officials said.
Chief Superintendent Lino Calingasan, Caraga police director, said at least 15 armed men led by a former member of Civilian Auxiliary Forces Geographical Unit identified as Ondo Perez raided the Maitum Elementary School and took the victims hostage in Sitio Maitum, Barangay San Martin around 8 a.m..
Calingasan said the hostage takers have already released 18 of the victims, including 17 pupils and an old woman.
The regional police office's operations chief, Senior Superintendent Nestor Fajura told ANC that a team of policemen were on their way to Prosperidad town to serve warrants of arrest against Perez and the members of his group.
Fajura said Perez's group are suspects in the massacre of the family of a certain Jun Tubay, a resident of Prosperidad, last February. He said the group hostaged the pupils to prevent the arrest.
