I've had my face buried in HTML code for days and haven't been following much news. Thanks for the heads up. The Philippines sure is having a run of bad luck this year.

The pictures look very serious, and red cross is already on alert:

Volcanoes don't erupt that often and volcanic soils are very fertile, so farmers weigh the risks and farm the slopes of many volcanoes, these spawn towns and cities. No surprise they need to up-sticks once in a while.

I am now in Pattaya and internet is miserable here. So I did not follow the news.

The Mayon Volcano in Bicol had a strong eruption around 1984, while I was in Philippines in Legazpi city nearby. About 25 years ago.

At that time railway tracks and farmer housings there were destroyed, and all was in a chaos around the volcano.

My personal relationship in Philippines is for Cebu, so nobody there had any problem with this volcano eruption.
