A Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) sergeant and a company director claimed trial at the Sessions Court here on Wednesday in connection with the two missing F5E jet engines.

N. Tharmendran, 42, who is still serving in the Air Force, allegedly conspired with Senior Airman Mohamad Shukri Mohamad Yusop at the Subang RMAF Air Movement Section to steal the two J8521-type engines from the Kuala Lumpur RMAF Material Processing Shed, MATRA 1, in Sungai Besi in Kuala Lumour.

The jet engines, worth an estimated RM100mil and belonging to the 12th Squadron (Scorpion) based in Butterworth, were stolen in 2007 from the RMAF godown in Kuala Lumpur.

...

On Monday, Atorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said that the stolen engines had “left” Malaysia for Argentina but were off-loaded to another vessel bound for Uruguay.

Selling them for good money. There are many customers in need for items which might be useful for the military.

It's not only about dealing with weapons, but with technical supply about material, which cannot be easily exported without government approval.

Such material like jet engines might be sold and resold, moved from country to country several times, until arriving at their final destination, I think. It's said in this article, it moved from (origin = USA?) to Malaysia, from there to Argentine, Uruguay, and what will be the next ...? Venezuela maybe?
