And I thought the gambling addiction hoo-ha was excessive in Australia.

Quote

SINGAPORE - When Singapore's first two casinos open, this is how the chips will fall for the Singapore gambler - as the National Council of Problem Gambling envisions:

Besides paying the $100 entry fee, a Singaporean or permanent resident will have to go through a specific entry lane.

When he enters the casino, he can opt into a scheme in which he sets a gaming limit for himself.

Only cash is accepted at the casino. There will be no ATMs, and the customer has to exit if he needs to withdraw more money.

And $100 for a native or PR just to get in the front door. SHEESH!

I've been talking to a work colleague of chinese decent. He's sure that he is going to boost his income by SGD2000 per week by gambling in the new casino once its opens.

So far I manage to keep a straight face during the conversation..

As a stereotype, the Chinese are the only group who are greater bunch of gamblers than Australians. I'm not surprised this guy has faith in himself or whatever he's praying to to make a fortune. Don't reckon I could keep a straight face for too long, either.

Chatting to Taxi Uncle on my way into town the other day and his view was that if the s$100 entry fee concerned people, they probably wouldnt be going to the casino in the 1st place (i.e. was neither here nor there given how much people were likely to gamble).

Also made an interesting observation about why Singapore needed 2 Casinos... "If one of them is unlucky for you tonight, you go to the other one"!!!

True. Betting in the thousands makes $100 look like chump change. But if you only want to go in there and have a gander at the place and maybe put $5 on the roulette wheel, it's going to be an expensive night out.
