The government is advocating a major re-think on the importation of foreign workers into Singapore:

The influx of foreign workers has to slow, this much has been made clear. But instead of keeping "rigidly to a fixed number year after year" - in the words of Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam - the Republic will rely primarily on a pricing mechanism, in the form of higher worker levies, to manage its dependence on foreign labour.
A fact noted that I was unaware of is that almost one-third of the workforce is "foreign". Sure enough there are plenty of Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan workers on building sites and there is quite a march of people across the Causeway and then back again at the end of their day, but a figure of one-in-three seems high. Ditto for the number of high-end imports.
Or maybe I'm just not looking properly. Another thing to do when I visit...
