I think I'm gonna be moving to Hong Kong for work. I married Thai girl but work is not so plentiful to find in Thailand. I think my prof is in demand and I had some informal chats to employers in Hong Kong, I think it will be better for me to go there. Maybe I take my wife too. I've not been in Hong Kong, I want to know what is the expat areas and the popular place for expat to live, not too expensive? I don't know where I will work.

If you work in Central and want to walk to work, go to the Mid-Levels, which are served by the Mid-Levels Escalator
If you're on a more modest budget, look further along the Island Line to places like North Point
If money is no object, go to The Peak

Hey you know what, I've been living in the Mid-Levels for roughly 3 years now. I would say this is the best place to live in HK. It has everything you want--transport, restaurants, shopping malls, you name it.
A bunch of my colleagues live in Wanchai, Happy Valley and the Peak. Still, I think Mid-Levels is the best.

I agree. Try to live somewhere by the midlevels escalator.

So, what kind of rates can I expect in the Mid-Levels? I am moving to Hong Kong with my wife in November or December and we are trying to get an idea of housing costs. What can I expect for a 1 or 2 bedroom flat out there?
Thanks
edenslip

That size for an apartment in a decent area you're looking in the region of HKD 40,000 a month- USD 5150- according to the link cheesindave gave.

Hongkers aint cheap.

I would be amazed if anyone local here in HK can find a 1000 sq.ft. flat for less than HKD20K on HK island.
.
I found a good deal in Tung Chung.
.
Yes, I all know what you are thinking, "OH, DAT SO FAR-WAY, LA"
.
Which is why this area is so special.
.
keeps out the riffraff who have difficulty with any place that does not have a bar/disco/pub within 50 meters of their present location.
.
I suggest, anyone who seeks a relocating experience here in the P.R. China's special administrative region of Hong Kong to
#1: take out a piece of paper.
#2: write at the top, "what I seek in a local community."
#3: list one by one, all the things, facilities, venues, places, exchange and transaction points desired.
#4: when you run out of things to list, leave the paper for a while and envision yourself living in the kind of desired environment.
#5: continue back to the list when new things or points come to mind.
#6: research online what HK towns or built-up environs or MTR stop residencies which match what is most important to you.
.
or you can do what the brits do and just forfeit 60%-80% of salary on a 500sq.ft. open storage space, just for the chance to drop the words "soho", "robinson rd" "Pokfulam" when they order over-priced, watered down drinks at LKF.
.
has anyone ever noticed the amount of dog urine and feces smell lingering on every midlevel walking path?
.
enjoy your crowded, noisy, high cost existence.
