Modern British career women converting to Islam

Tony Blair’s sister-in-law announced her conversion to Islam last weekend. Journalist Lauren Booth embraced the faith after what she describes as a ‘holy experience’ in Iran.
She is just one of a growing number of modern British career women to do so.
"In the West, we are stressed for superficial reasons, like what clothes to wear. In Islam, everyone looks to a higher goal. Everything is done to please God. It was a completely different value system. Despite my lifestyle, I felt empty inside and realised how liberating it was to be a Muslim. To follow only one god makes life purer. You are not chasing every fad."

Quite a few indigenous Australians have taken up Islam over the last 20 years or so. Seeing what the Christian churches have done for the blackfella over the last 200 years, and that most urban aboriginals either half- or less-than aboriginal (many part of the "stolen generation") or well-removed from their ancestral lands and people, the brotherhood of Islam must provide a very viable alternative.
For them and anyone else, the structure of religion- Five Pillars of Islam and so on- provide not only a contemplative environment, as you say hobbler, but also a focus for their lives. And also a measure of the strength of their faith, with will serve as a positive feedback on the increased focus, sense of brotherhood with other Muslims and so on.

The thread's about women.
I'm sure the convictions of the women in question are about as deep as their convictions to marry "til death do us part".
It's a fad, a fashion accessory and nothing more.

There'd be a bit of faddishness (is that actually a word?) with some converting to Islam, I'm sure, but not all of them. Bit like those who went all "free love and mung beans" in the 60's. And the hippies weren't about equality for women, either!

As for the Islamic converts, when any society becomes too materialistic or corrupt, the spiritually inclined will look for a religion or philosophy that offers an antidote. It was Buddhism or New Age in the 60s and 70s, now it's Kabbalah or Islam. Personally, I think Buddhism would work better for a woman in the West, but Islam perhaps offers more of a sense of community.
