You were right. The consulate is closed on Friday. I called today and talked to a lady. She said that they will change my B3 to a C2 (which is a family and other purpose visa) I just have to go to the office on Monday. I am hoping that they actually keep their word. We shall see.

I thought u were here in VN.
You will most likely need to do it in person at this end as Kim said.
+84 is the country code. their office number is 0983748801.
Not sure if you need to drop the first 0.

Once in the country and you want to renew your visa, keep in mind that you can get an extention instead of a renewal. A renewal is another sticker that fills up a page and is more expensive ($100 for a 3 month multiple) than an extension that is simply another small stamp ($20 for 30 days if you have a one month single entry visa, $25 for 30 days if you have a one month multiple entry and $50 for 90 days if you have a 3 month visa).
If you get an extension then it is only valid as single entry. If you want multiple entry status then you need a renewal.
Keep in mind that if you are doing business in Vietnam, you may by required to have a business visa that is a multiple entry visa.
Also keep in mind that extensions and renewals can take 7 working days.
For the 5 year visa exception, if you go to any consulate with the marriage papers, it should only cost $20-$25.
You do not have to leave the country every 3 months. When I had mine, I just had to get a letter stamped by the local police that stated that I've living at the same address where I'm registered. Take that letter to immigration and pay them $10.

I'm happy that your extension went with ease. Until next time, right?

I used get questions at the airport with my B3 visas. What do I do in Vietnam? Well, I don't do anything, not a thing. I am not retired but I don't work in Vietnam and don't intent to. So far, other than the odd question it never caused any real problems at the airport, but it did once cause us make leave our bus coming back in at the Cambodia border, the then bus carried on without us and they kept us there for 3 hours trying to work out if it was a real visa. Just like you I never asked for a business visa, that's just what I got given. I have to go back later this year I am not looking forward to all this messing around.
