Is sex tourism bad for Bangkok?

Thailand, or at the least, Websters definition of prostitution and Thailands is not the same.

I suppose you have to consider the thought of a girl getting an "out" to a better life by marrying a Western customer, but I seriously doubt this is the reason most girls go into the trade. From what I can gather, it's still a social stigma to be known as one or to have one as a daughter- even though she is providing the family in a dirt-poor village with a liveable income. Far too much information available to support any number of opinions on the matter.

Thai lad has his head in the sand stating it came from yanks in Vietnam. Fking useless sod.
Chuwit is his usual hilarious self - love to have a drink with him.

Just for cross-reference of the comments made by SMBKK in the above thread.
Prostitution in Thailand was always existing, long time before the Vietnam War.
Western foreigners and even including Asian foreigners are only a small part of those customers.
The majority of Thai prostitutes take care of Thai men coming from any social level, from the rich businessman/politician down to the motorcycle-taxi rider/factory worker.
Any do-gooder, clergyman, feminist and so on (mostly from USA, UK, Sweden etc) who is keeping mainly the farang man responsible for prostitution in Thailand has no idea of this country.

The flash and show stuff for foreigners here in Bangkok (Soi Cowboy, Nana & Patpong) make up a very visible but very little drop in the bucket. Even factoring in Pattaya (possibly the most un-thai city in the entire country) and you're still in the very low numbers percentage-wise as far as foreign/Thai prostitutes versus Thai/Thai ones.
Stocky is more than a little mistaken in that broad brush statement that Thai/Thai prostitution is "the little roadside karaoke shack that the truck driver would frequent". True there are more than a few of those, BUT...
There are also really high end places that a foreigner couldn't even get into without a Thai takin' 'em there and then a myraid of places in between.
Every one buffalo village up country in Nakhon Nowhere Thailand has a "no tell motel" on the outskirts. In Thai they're called โรงแรมม่านรูด (literally a hotel where you draw the curtain after you park your car, so nosy people don't know you're there). Usually not to far away are the Thai women "standin' around" to choose from. ..
Also factor in most of the Thai prostitutes which target the "foreign demographic" are of the "spec" Thai men would probably "turn their noses up at". Indeed that "look" of Thai gurl would be shown the door if they applied for work in even modest priced "karaoke/hostess bars" for Thai clientele here in Bangkok. Most Thai men don't really go for that dark, dumb, splayed toed, pug-nosed, tattooed, rice farmer's daughter look all that much... That's the foreign penchant, NOT the Thai one.. They just opened a "hostess bar" on my Soi next to my apartment for Thais and the females working there are anything but the previously mentioned "foreign spec". These gurls are white skinned, slender, well dressed, and certainly a "cut above" the Thai women working in the foreign oriented go-go bars here.
Go to Hualamphong MRT station one nite; take a walk around and see the "SomTam gurls" with the mats spread over the sidewalk. Yet not a single mortar/pestle or plate of SomTam bein' served. They're low end "free-lancers" for Thais who'll take you back in the bushes for some "spicy somtam". Conversely, go to Lumpini Park and look at the gurlz millin' around there, believe me they ain't there because foreigners wander by, in fact most would't even look at let alone talk to a foreigner. There are places like that ALL over Bangkok.
Foreigners here get the false impression because the foreign/Thai prostitution is so "in your face", that the fact foreigners DON'T see the Thai/Thai stuff means it doesn't exist here or if it does, it's in small numbers. Nothing could be further from the truth.
About 4 months ago I went with some Thai guys my age to a "Thai Karaoke Bar", and in all honesty, if I'da walked past it, I wouldn't have known it was even there. NO gurls outside cajoling customers, no flashing neon, NO NOTHING. It was the most unobtrusive shop house in a row of similar shop houses smack dab in the middle of Bangkok. However once we went inside, it was indeed a thriving and busy "karaoke bar". In fact, it was so busy we had to wait to get a "karaoke room".
These are the places where you buy a bottle of alcohol (and they give you mixers and ice free), you pic a couple gurls and go upstairs to what look like "livingrooms with attached bathrooms". There was a big sofa, a coupla nice overstuffed chairs, a giant flat screen t/v, wireless microphones and about a million songs on the karaoke machine. Once you lock the sliding glass patio doors, and pull the curtain, what ever deal you cut with the gurls who help sing "karaoke" are between you and the gurls. I've also been to Thai oriented go-go bars, but again, it's NOT the flash and glitz, although the gurls do "hug the pole" inside on stage. These are places the run-of-the-mill-foreigner isn't EVER gonna see, and unlikely to get into alone if they stumbled across one. Still there're far more of them here in Bangkok than there are foreign oriented go-go bars that's for sure.
I think any foreigner who believes the foreign/Thai prostitution in this country contributes in any way to the "bottom line" as far as a real money here compared to the Thai/Thai prostitution which goes on, is sadly mistaken. Either that or their signifcant Thai other was a former "pole hugger" by profession. I know foreigners wanna feel "important" here in the scheme of things, but I hate to burst your bubble or p### in your iced Chang beer, believe me, we really ain't.
Of course, what is ANY Thai gonna say, except foreigners "brought" prostitution here? To think a Thai would tell anyone otherwise is just plain stupid, after all prostitution is illegal here isn't it?

For a full view of all the issues including why Thai women fall into prostitution and how hard it is for a good looking farmer's daughter to avoid it, do please read my novel, THAI GIRL. It's all there so I will not ramble on any more here.
Suffice to say, my suggestion is that the farang sector of the Thai sex industry in terms of the number of sex workers is perhaps one percent and not even five.
So is prostitution good for Bangkok and Thailand?
It's great for the exploiters such as Chewit but a total unmitigated disaster for their country.

I fully agree with that.
But it is a pretty lucrative part.

During conversations with guys here in Australia, when they find out I travel through Bangkok, the first thing that they ask is where are the best bars and brothels in Bangkok.
To most young guys Thailand and sex go together and to them this is what it is all about when they go there.
I try to explain to them there is a lot more than that in the country but most of what I say falls on deaf ears and they mindset is on one thing only.

I wasn't aware I'd said all Thai/Thai prostitution goes on at the roadside karaoke joint. I'm just suggesting that a very significant part of it does, seeing as it caters for the average working class Somchai.

But why is it so?
Either that's all true and all Thailand is really a unique sex-place...
these young men are missing something in their own country, something they expect to find in Thailand...
I think, it's more about 2 - these young men are missing something in their own country...
Read this article:
Before Marriage Comes the Pre-Nup
I cannot blame young men to look under such circumstances for a 'better dating'...

I think it may also be an ' availability ' thing. That is, sex is there for sale and can be easily bought and paid for like a can of pepsi or a beer.
The thought of having pretty young ladies fawning over you is a great boost to the male ego.
They are perhaps not missing something in their own country, just the ease of being able to pick up or be picked up by a nubile young lady appeals to them. No chance of missing out in Thailand as there is back home.
