This is also my flight philosophy... The problem is that TG never seem to match up with my timing requirements on the BKK-CEI route, so it's just more convenient to use one of the budgets.
Actually, the timings on TG matched up perfectly this time...

Well dont mind the riff raff especially when it's only few hrs and dirt cheap.
Thing is, it's not dirt cheap. I just booked a round trip from Bangkok to Chiang Rai on Thai for the three of us (two adults, one child) i.e. a total of six PAX, and it was only ~ ฿3000 more expensive than AirAsia, who's diabolical online booking system used all kinds of sneaky tricks to hide the real total fare, adding on baggage fees during the process (of course we have bags!) and trying to sell you their own travel insurance (I have my own thanks) while trying to hide the fact they already added it on. Not only that, it would have meant hours and hours waiting at Suvarnabhumi (no thanks).
A total saving of ฿3000 (return) for three passengers is just not worth the aggravation and the time lost during transit (we'd probably spend that on food etc while trying to kill time at the airport anyway). I booked with Thai, so I get my Star Alliance points too.
