3 siblings lived with dead parent for nearly a decade, police in Japan say - AP

TOKYO (AP) - Police on Tuesday questioned three siblings after it was discovered they had been living with the decomposed corpse of their father for nearly a decade, an official said.

Police found the body of Kyujiro Kanaoka lying on a futon bed at the family's home in Itami city in Hyogo prefecture in western Japan, said a prefectural police spokesman, who declined to be identified.

Kanaoka's three elderly children, all in their 70s or older, told police they thought their father was still alive but that one of them recently had consulted a relative about the possibility that he might be dead, the spokesman said.

Police were investigating the cause of Kanaoka's death. Judging from the condition of his decomposed body, Kanaoka may have died as long as 10 years ago, the spokesman said.

Had he been alive, the man would be 107 years old. Hyogo prefecture had registered Kanaoka as its oldest living resident, public broadcaster NHK said.

Consulted a relative, I just love it.

Wonder, what was going on 7 years ago, for sure the head of Hyogo prefecture had brought some flowers for the 100th birthday

City's 'oldest man' had been dead for a decade

ITAMI, Hyogo -- A man feted as Itami's oldest male had actually been dead for as much as a decade while his elderly children conducted bizarre rituals around his corpse, police said.

Kyujiro Kanaoka had for years been recognized as Itami's oldest male resident, but an autopsy conducted Tuesday revealed that he had actually died of illness or natural causes some time from five to 10 years ago.

His three children, all in their 70s, are currently being questioned by the police about Kanaoka's death.

His 75-year-old son prompted the discovery of his father's body after talking about it to a relative, who alerted the police.

"A religious group in Osaka said one of our prayers would be realized in a major way in the third month of the Year of the c*ck (March, 2005), so we told the police about (the body)," the son said.

The son and two sisters aged 79 and 72 had lived together with Kanaoka. They had kept his kimono-clad body in the first room of their house in Itami. The body had mummified. The futon on which the body was laid was surrounded by religious amulets, charms and notes. The offspring left meals beside the old man's body every day.

Itami Municipal Government officials, who until the discovery of the body believed Kanaoka was still alive aged 107, said that none of the four had been receiving any sort of social security payment.

Kanaoka had been recognized as Hyogo Prefecture's oldest male resident since July last year and Itami's oldest man since 1999.

Itami Mayor Tsutomu Matsush*ta would send him gifts every year on Respect for the Aged Day to mark his achievement. When Matsush*ta went to visit Kanaoka on the national holiday in September last year, family members told him that although Kanaoka could speak, he was bedridden and unable to meet any visitors. Matsush*ta left the scene without entering the Kanaoka home.

A neighbor of the Kanaoka family was shocked by the discovery.

"I thought something was a little strange, because you'd see all these pamphlets talking about him as being the oldest person, but you never actually saw him," the 80-year-old woman said. (Mainichi Shimbun, March 9, 2005)
