A brief introduction to Roppongi in Tokyo

As a first time visitor to Japan or as an expatriate, you'll likely end up in Roppongi sooner or later, especially if you're into bars and nightclubs. Roppongi boasts numerous bars, discotheques, restaurants, and hostess clubs and manages to combine sleaze and sophistication.

It is expensive however, tends to be frequented by Western expatriate business types and financial staff. Some expatriates avoid Roppongi as they are under the impression it is overpriced and does not fit in well with Tokyo in general. Some nightclubs stay open all night on Saturdays, even as late as Sunday lunchtime. A famous example of a Roppongi Hostess Club is known as 'One Eyed Jacks'. One part of this establishment caters to Western clientele or Japanese men that prefer to talk to Caucasian women, whereas the other side caters only to Japanese man with only Japanese women.

Perhaps as an indicator of certain attitudes towards Westerners, the truly high end Hostess clubs will not admit Western customers.
