Singapore Skyline

Singapore is widely regarded by economists as having the most successful free market economies in the world. It is prosperous, modern, clean, and virtually free of obvious crime, well managed and its citizens enjoy what is probably one of the highest standards of living of any country.

It is in fact an island city, situated between the Malay Peninsula (across the Johor Straight) and Indonesia and is a mere 42 kilometres by 23 kilometres in size. Four and a half million people are crammed onto this patch of land and it has almost the highest concentration of people in the world.

Singapore is also a popular tourist destination and the tourism industry is a major contributor to the economy. Almost ten million tourists visited Singapore in 2005, attracted by two centuries of colonial history and the resulting mix of cultures.

The population widely support the secular government strict control and although many outsiders consider it authoritarian, the republic has low crime and corruption is almost unheard of. A high gross domestic product is part of the fact that Singapore a large trading, finance and transportation hub, strategically located and was one of the original 'East Asian Tigers'.

As for expatriates, there is certainly a thriving expat community in Singapore employed accross a variety of sectors but notably the shipping, oil and banking industries.
