Singapore is an island city state, situated between the Malay Peninsula (across the Johor Straight) and Indonesia and is a mere 42 kilometres by 23 kilometres in size. Four and a half million people are crammed onto this patch of land and it has almost the highest concentration of people in the world.

Singapore is also a popular tourist destination and the tourism industry is a major contributor to the economy. Almost ten million tourists visited Singapore in 2005, attracted by two centuries of colonial history and the resulting mix of cultures.

The population widely support the secular government strict control and although many outsiders consider it authoritarian, the republic has low crime and corruption is almost unheard of. A high gross domestic product is part of the fact that Singapore a large trading, finance and transportation hub, strategically located and was one of the original 'East Asian Tigers'.
