Gay Thailand

Thailand has always been very tolerant of alternative sexualities. Gay men and ladyboys are often gentle natured, just as the straight Thais are. Combine this with the vibrant gay scene in Bangkok and other cities and it makes Thailand a prime destination for gay travellers. Bangkok is often cited as being the gay capital of Asia.

Many gay travellers come to the gay pride events and festivals in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. In general, Thai gay's are open about their sexuality and harassment of gays is almost non-existent, such is the tolerance taught by Buddhism.

The main gay areas in Bangkok are Soi 2 and Soi 4, just off the main Silom Road, not far from Patpong. Soi 2 is is full of dance clubs, whereas Soi 4 is more laid back with pubs and bars, with a handful of places to eat. As these places are well known, they tend to have prices to match. You can also find more naughty gay bars and gogo's in the nearby Patpong.

Lower prices can be found in places like Soi Ramkhamhaeng 89/2, otherwise known locally as Lamsalee, where there are gay clubs and bars, sometimes filled with students due to the lower prices. There are gay establishments scattered around Bangkok that are not frequented by tourists, such as those around Saphan Kwai. Silom Sois 2 and 4 are firmly on the tourist map.
