Tawan Daeng

The Tawan Daeng (Thai for 'Red Sun') brewery is not well known or well patronised by foreigners but is hugely popular with local Thais. If more expats were aware of the place, I'm convinced they would want to go and enjoy the place because they're really missing out.

There are several Tawan Daeng type beer halls in Bangkok but for the purpose of this article, we will talk about the one on Rama III road, which is a huge place, brewing it's own beer with a large stage and stunning entertainment seven nights a week.

The venue is almost entirely a dining area and large groups can be accommodated. Later, people tend to get up and dance around their tables. There is a large area in front of the stage, or you can be seated in one of the upstairs areas.

The stage shows are varied but the overall theme is supposed to be that of the Isaan culture of the Northeast of Thailand. However, all manner of elaborate stage acts and singers will provide non stop entertainment while you eat and drink from the excellent menu. If you're lucky, you might catch a famous Thai headline act.

If you're a farang face, it's very likely you'll be approached by the floor manager and asked if you'll go up on stage to play a drinking game. This usually involves downing a glass of beer as quickly as possible through a straw after consuming a sausage and putting on a Tawan Daeng T-shirt. You get to keep the T-shirt for your trouble.

We highly recommend this Thai flavoured night out but it does get very busy every night and if you turn up at the wrong time, you might be forced to queue outside for ages, especially at the weekend...

See the Tawandaeng website for reservation contact details.
