Bangkok Apartments
The popular and most well known expatriate areas in Bangkok are Sukhumvit Rd and the Silom/Sathorn area. They are also the most expensive, due to their popularity and proximity to the central business district and entertainment venues. Every accommodation type can be found, from one room studio apartments, to multi roomed villas on secure compounds.
However, with the opening of the Skytrain and underground system, it's much easier to get around town, making other areas more attractive. Living a little way out of town can save you a considerable amount of money. Places like Chinatown, Victory monument and Thonburi are all within striking distance of the city centre but offer much better value for money for the long term resident. Avoiding the core expat areas could half your rent, without sacrificing standards. Of course, if you've got a big budget, or your employer is paying the rent, you will probably prefer to take advantage of a very central location.
