Chiang Mai
Last updated 2008-02-01
Chiang Mai has a substantial expatriate population. Many chose this city as a place to live or as a long term vacation spot in order to enjoy the relatively relaxed lifestyle and atmosphere. However, Chiang Mai is growing and many complain of heavy traffic, pollution trapped by the surrounding mountains and an increase in high rise construction.
This northern city is still blessed with it's famous laid back atmosphere and if you're used to the fast pace of cosmopolitan Bangkok, you may find the nightlife rather tame and quiet... but this is also a reason many choose to live here. It is extremely safe and pleasant, even late at night. There is not the expat business community you find in Bangkok and many are retired expats, often living with their Thai wife or husband. Interestingly, there is a much higher ration of foreign women in Chiang Mai than elsewhere in Thailand.
Tourists are everywhere and unfortunately, many are of the scruffy backpacker type. Flights to and from Bangkok and other regional hubs are cheap and plentiful, making Chiang Mai an excellent base to explore the region. The airport is just a short distance from the city and access is easy. Metered taxis are available and will usually cost less than 100 Baht. Accommodation of all types are considerably cheaper overall than in Bangkok, making it an attractive long term option. This is a place to come and relax, although it's getting busier every year.
